Plot Summary

Mort Rainey is a middle-aged author suffering from writer’s block. He’s also locked in a contentious divorce after catching his wife in an affair. Alone and bitter in a remote cabin to which he’s retreated, he soldiers on with his writing. Then a stranger named John Shooter shows up at his doorstep, claiming Rainey has stolen a story he wrote. Mort says he can prove the story is his and not Shooter’s, but as he searches for an old copy of the magazine in which it first appeared, bad things start to happen. Mort’s dog dies, people around him begin to die, and his divorce proceedings grow uglier.

Main Characters

Johnny Depp is Mort Rainey, the tortured writer caught in a turmoil of personal and professional life crises.

Timothy Hutton is Ted Milner, the arrogant lover whose eagerness to strip Mort’s ex-wife out of his life only provokes Mort to a deeper state of anger.

John Turturro is John Shooter, the lowly Southerner with an accent as fierce as his temper, who accuses Mort of lifting his story.
